NORTH AUSTRALIA.
“MUST BE DEVELOPED.” A warning that North Australia must be developed if it is to be retained was given by the Federal Minister for the Interior (Air Perkins) when addressing the Gonlburn Rotary Club. ‘‘ We have to solve the problem of the Northern Territory,” said Air Perkins. “AVe have had controL of it practically ever since the Commonwealth came into existence, but as a place of settlement it is no better off to-day than it was then. This is getting serious, because the eyes of the world are on us. It is the largest undeveloped country in the world at present, and if we do not do something with it we will be told to' ‘get a move on.’ Grey, an explorer there 100 years ago, said there was room for six or seven million people in North Western Australia. The whole of Australia is supporting only that number. Most of the country in North Australia is poor, but there are patches that are good, and those patches are the size of England and Wales.”
