SOUTHWARD BOUND
BYRD’S SHIPS DEPARTING. BOSTON, Sept. 23. Coaled and provisioned, the Bear of Oakland will leave on Monday, heading an expedition into Little America, Rear-Admiral Richard E. Byrd announced on Saturday night, to be followed a few days later by the Pacific Fir, which is expected to overtake the Bear of Oakland at the Canal Zone, where the first stop will be made before the second leg of the trip to the ships’ base in New Zealand. The Bear of Oakland will carry a picked crew and scientists, their equipment. and a quantity of food supplies. The Pacific Fir is loaded with the greater share of the items needed for Polar survey.
