NO BAND CONTEST.

LOCAL ULTIMATUM ACCEPTED. DECISION BY ASSOCIATION. Information was received to-day by Mr P. S. Larcomb, secretary of the Palmerston North band contest committee, that the committee’s ultimatum to the controlling authorities, that it would not condiict the contest, in February next, unless there was adherence to the original conditions, had been accepted. This means that the fixture is now definitely abandoned, at least so far as this centre is concerned. Tho New Zealand Brass Bands Association met at Wellington on Saturday when, according to advice received to-rjny from the secretary (Mr J. G. Osborne), it carried unanimously the following resolution: — “That the New Zealand Brass Bands Association regret that the Palmerston North commitee has found it necessary to abandon the proposal for the 1934 contest, and that the intimation to that effect as contained in their letter of September 19 be accepted.” It will be remembered that the Palmerston North Band contest committee objected to the New Zealand Brass Bands Association requiring a contest fee of £SO and 10 per cent of the profits when its president at a meeting in Palmerston North on June 30 had said that the forthcoming contest would be run on new lines and onjy in the event of a reasonable profit would a contest fee be required, and in any case this would not exceed £SO. The imposition of 10 per cent of the profits was contested by the local committee and on Monday, September IS, they met and passed the following resolution : “That the attention of the New Zealand Brass Bands Association be directed to the definite statements made by Mr Bennett to tho effect that, after the result of the proposed contest had been ascertained, a fee not exceeding £SO would be required by the association, and that, as the association is not prepared to honour these statements we definitely abandon the undertaking.” Tlie New Zealand Brass Bands Association were advised of this decision and a reply was received last week as follows: —“Your letter of 19th inst. came up before my management committee at a special meeting held today and it was decided, as it was not within its power to vary resolutions adopted at the annual conferences, that the full executive be called to discuss tlie position. This has been called for Saturday next when the delegates from both Islands are expected to be present.”
