ROAD CYCLE RACE.
THE PROFESSIONAL EVENT. WON BY BAILEY. The Manawatu Counties’ Cash Cycling Club conducted a professional event on Saturday from Terrace End to Asbhurst and hack. Conditions were good, excepting for a fairly strong wind, and the race was won hy C. Bailey in a hot finish with the other two placed men, the three coming over the final burst in a bunch. The result was as follows: —C. Bailey (4Jmin.) 43min. 33sec., 1; B. McBrearty 43min. 33 l-ssec., 2; W. Smith (SJmin.), 43min. 33 2-5 sec., 3. Bailey shot ahead of the other two to prevail hy a length in an exceptionally close finish. W. Rodgers (Bmin.) finished some distance behind, followed at a brief distance' by W. Collins (3min.), whose riding time was 44min. 48sec. These were the only other starters. The race was in the nature of a final preparation for the big event of the season to Wanganui and hack, next Saturday. Eight New Plymouth riders have nominated for this event, and there will be several countestants from Wanganui and other centres. NO AMATEUR RACE. The Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was to have held a race over a route three times round the Gillespie’s Line block, but the event was postponed owing to an insufficiency of starters: RACE AT CHRISTCHURCH. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 23. Two brothers, R. C. and A. P. Day, fought out the finish of the 100 miles ama Vmr road cycling championship to-day after leading over the whole journey. R. C. Day is 18 years old and his brother is 15. E. O’Neill scored fastest time, 4hrs. 58min. ssec., and won the championship. A. P. Day won the championship for fastest time under 18 years. Results are: R. C. Day (45min.), 1; A. P. Day (40min.) 2, W. Kerr (25min.) 3.
