ABOLITION OF DISCRIMINATION* NEW YURK, Sept. 22. A National Recovery Act code for the unemployed was submitted to the Recovery Administration to-dav by the Federation of Unemployed Organisations. It requests a grant of 14 dollars a week to all unemployed with 3 dollars 5U cents extra for each dependent, and a minimum wage of 50 cents an hour on such emergency work as is available. The abolition of ail discrimination because of race, religion, or political affiliation is demanded, and the federation requests the privilege of “collective dealing” with unemployment relief agencies. A NEAVSPAPER CODE. AVASHINGTON. Sept. 22. Further hearings in the newspaper code proceedings have been held. The editorial representatives of several publications insisted that writers be granted National Recovery Act privileges instead of being exempt as “professional men.” In the original code the publishing interests insisted on the right to employ newsboys for limited hours of work over the objection against child labour. Representatives present said the hoys function as “young merchants,” and work out of doors, which does not injure their health or morals. A FARM STRIKE. DES MOINES (Iowa), Sept. 22. The National Farmers’ Holiday Association to-day voted to declare a farm strike on all products and ask the co-operation of labour if its demands, embodied in tlie National Recovery Act codes, are not complied with by the Administration. THE FORD AA’ORIvERS. NEW AVAGE SCALE. AVASHINGTON, Sept. 23. Fifty thousand employees of Mr Henry Ford have been officially notified that they will start a 32-hour week on Monday. The new wage scale lias not been revealed, but it is said it would certainly not be less than 50 cents an hour, and in most cases more. Regarding the new hours, it is explained that within six or eight weeks a 40-hour week will be resumed temporarily, with a view to maintaining the average of 35, as prescribed. A National Recovery Act administration spokesman said Mr Ford had no intention of violating the code, but there is no indication that lie intends to sign it. MUNICIPALITIES’ DEBTS. TWO BILLION DOLLARS. Received September 25, 9.10 a.m. VANCOUVER, Sept. 23. It was stated at a conference of Mayors in Chicago that only two municipalities in the United States have a surplus —San Francisco and Rochester (Minnesota). Three thousand are in default, the amount totalling two billion dollars. The remedy is considered to be some sort of a Municipal Bankruptcy Act, cities and bondholders being given the right to compose the debts. The groat majority are sound, but need temporary lielp.
