HIGH FEELING

ATTITUDE TOWARD JAPAN. AUSTRALIA AND DUTIES. TRADE RELATIONS ENDANGERED (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received September 23, 12.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 23. Mr Tanabo, secretary of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Sydney, told the Tariff Board that there was a danger of the trade relations of Japan and Australia being imperilled if dumping duties were imposed on imports from Japan, where the attitude of the Commonwealth was causing feeling to run high. The chairman, Mr McConaghy, said that dumping duties had lieen imposed on other countries at various times and Japan had not been singled out for special attention. Mr Holt, representing the Chamber of Manufacturers, said that, while Japan was at present Australia’s greatest anxiety, there were other countries from which her position may be attacked. A fixed rate in the “foreign” column of the tariff was preferable to a dumping duty on individual countries.
