CRICKET.

THE Y.M.C.A. CLUB. The annual meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Cricket Club was held last evening, Mr W. B. Cameron presiding over a good attendance. He congratulated the club on the progress it had made, and the report (already published) was adopted. The opportunity was taken by Mr T. R. Hoctder, as the donor, to present to George Marshall a bat for the best average in the third grade last season, and ho congratulated the winner on being the only one to score a century in that grade. Interesting reminiscences were given by Mr Hodder of the game of cricket as played in the Manawatu 44 years ago. He mentioned, incidentally, that before a, syndicate acquired and later handed over to the City Council the area known as the Sportsground, the first cricket field in Palmerston North was where the Y.M.C.A. now stood. Officers were elected as follow for the ensuing year: —President, Mr W. B. Cameron; vice-presidents, Messrs L. Lauronsou, W. G. Miller (Auckland), It. C. Donald, T. It. Hodder and J. C. Young; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr C-. Rumble ; club captain, Mr G. Griggs; vice-captain, Mr It. ltiley; two other committee members. Messrs J. Griggs and 0. Goodjohn; selectors, captain and vice-captain; .delegate to Manawatu Cricket Association, Mr G. Griggs. The subscription was fixed at 12s 6d, reducible to 10s if paid by the end of December, and payable in instalments. The first practice was fixed for September 30, providing a wicket is available. The question of laying down a practice wicket behind the Y.M.C.A. building was referred to the incoming committee. .

Objections were made to a proposal in another club’s remit to divide the junior competition into two grades, -it being considered that the present system was bettor socially and also encouraged the weaker players. Opposition was voiced to the City Council Cricket Club’s suggestion to abolish the ten-minute tea interval at the Terrace End ground.
