WANGANUI MEETING.

SPEEDMINT THE CHIEF WINNER. ROYAL HUNTING’S SPRINT. BRILLIANCE OF POROTITI. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting commenced yesterday after a day’s postponement due to heavy rain. Conditions were suitable and on a good track excellent racing was witnessed. Speedmint won the Marangai Handicap, and the Flying Handicap went to Royal Hunting. The Seafield Handicap was won brilliantly by the three-year-old Porotiti. Favourites fared fairly well during the day, and there were none of the surprises usually associated with spring racing. The attendance was good, and the totalisator investments wore £6253 10s, against £6846 10s on the first day last spring, a decrease of £593. Considering that only £96 was invented on the opening event, this result must be viewed as very satisfactory. JOCKEY SUSPENDED. After the race for the Putiki Hack Handicap, R. McTavish, rider of the favourite, Cherry King, was called upon to explain his defeat. After hearing evidence the judicial committee exonerated the owner and trainer, but McTavish was suspended for threo months for not riding the horse on its merits. McTavish has lodged an appeal Against the sentence. In tho last race Merry Way met with severe interference, but this was found to be accidental. RACING IN DETAIL.
