RACING NEWS

FROM STABLEAND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) Blacksmith has rejoined the active brigade at Awapuni. Bodyline is being treated to a spell of a week and the Lord Quox colt will not raco at Wanganui. Vitaphono has been purchased, by the Trentham trainer, 11. L. Ivingan, from Mr W. R. lvemball. March Alone, who claims a New Zealand Cup engagement, has been schooled over the hurdles. Shatter is an expensive horse to his admirers. After being well placed in the early , stages in his race at Ashburton he failed to run on. Peter’s Pride (Chief Ruler—Cymene) is still an absentee from the tracks in the north. It would now appear that he will have to forgo his early engagements. Inflation has been nominated for the Rowley ’Mile, a.nd also the Flying Handicap, six furlongs, at the I-lawkesbury meeting next Saturday. A Sydney paper states that Inflation and Peter Jackson have been coupled for the Epsom and Metropolitan by a prominent New Zealand owner-trainer. - Golden Wedding has been-schooling well over the fences at Ellerslie and in a trial with Grant’s Opal the othor morning gave a much improved display on previous, efforts. . Bayacre appears among the nominations for the Rowley Mile at the Ilawkesbury meeting. Apparently the A.’J.C. ban does not cover this course, and, further, Bayacre’s recent mishap to a foot cannot bo very serious. J. F. Tutchen had a piece of misfortune when recently he lost a yearling half-bro-ther to ICahau by Acre. The youngster got entangled in a barb-wire fence and had to be destroyed. Croupier has not been set any serious tasks on the Riecarton tracks lately, having had an easy time since the Grand National meeting, where he had two hard races. He looks big' and well, ready to start on sprinting tasks in preparation for spring engagements. Nightguard, the brother to Phar Lap, is back at work after being operated on for trouble in the respiratory organs. Ho still makes a noise, and in consequence may never develop the form suggested by his early promise. The distance attached to the Canterbury Cup has been increased from a mile and aquarter to a mile and a half. It was for very many years run over two miles and a-quarter, except on two occasions, when the distance was cut down to a mile and three-quarters. It can be accepted as definite that R. Reed will be on Chatham in the Epsom Handicap (says “Pilot”). Last year that horse was ridden by J. Pike, who made an early engagement for Bronze Hawk on this occasion. It is probable Reed wi.l also be on Milantlieon in the Metropolitan. He will be on Bay Tree in the Derby. . 0 . , Bay Tree had his first race in Sydney at Roseuery on Wednesday week last. He was favourite for the second division ol the welter milo, in which he was No. 1 with 9.4. After meeting with a check near the half-mile he finished very strongly m third place. The Herald remarks that Bay Tree is a magnificent three-year-old by Chief Ruler trom Bayloch, and even if the Derby is beyond him he should repay the expenses of the New Zealand mentor, J II Jefferd, who trains him for Mr L. J. AVatt. . • . . The highest price realised for a foal in England for a considerable time was 2200 guineas brought by a bay filly by Tetrateina from Anne of Brittany (by Diligence) at the Newmarket second July sales. Ihe foal was purchased by Lord Ellesmere, and her dam went to Mr M. H. Benson at 1150 guineas. Anne of Brittany’s first foal is the speedy Miss Elegance. A LONG INTERVAL. Since L. Hewitt won the Epsom Handicap on Maximise and the Metropolitan on Solution in 1906, no jockey has brought off that double in the same season. This year, according to the betting quotations, M. McCarten is a jockey who has a reasonable chance of riding the winners of those races. He may be on Top lime in the Epsom, and Topical is his definite ■ mount in the Metropolitan. In 1931 McCarten won the Epsom on Autopay, and last year the Metropolitan on Denis Boy. AVith Blixten as his Derby mpunt, McCariten has excellent prospects in the three principal events ot the meeting, but lie knows the uncertainty of racing too well to be over-optimistic. SWEEP TICKETS' LONDON POLICE ACTION. According to the Daily Mail of August 12, The Home Office have ordered Scotland Yard and provincial forces to take strong action against' the, importation and sale “of sweepstake tickets in England. Raids have been carried out and already Irish and Italian sweepstake tickets have been stopped in largo numbers. In one place visited by the London police a haul amounting to many thousands of _ tickets was secured. In many districts uniformed policemen have been taken off their. ordinary duty to enable them to cope with the big traffic whiih is taking place in the disposal of these sweepstake tickets. It is not an offence for a person to purchase a ticket, but it is against the law for any person to act as a vendor. It is because of this that strong action has been taken to check the'free flow of tickets into tins country. It is known that by every post and m aeroplanes there are persons who are engaged in carrying these tickets for the purpose of handing them over to agents. Startling developments are shortly expected as a result of the police net which has been spread far and wide to trace the alleged culprits.

EQUIPOISE RETIRING.

NO RACE WITH WINOOKA. NEW YORK, Sept. 19. The racehorse Equipoise is to be retired after the Havre de Grace Handicap on September 30. As Winooka is nut eligible for the Havre de Grace, there is apparently no chance that he and Equipoise will ever meet. Mr C. B. Whitney, the owner, explains that Equipoise ran last Saturday with a slight crack on the wall of a front hoof. As this is a recurring injury, .he has decided to abandon hopes of the horse becoming the world’s greatest money-winner. Since lie first raced in April, 1930, Equipoise has won 320.970 dollars, the fourth highest in the world.
