GOLF SURPRISES

3.45 P.M. EDITION

BIG BRITISH TOURNEY. (United Press Association —By Electric Tel-eg r a p h —C op y light.) Received September 20, 1.5 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 19. Cotton is favourite for the News of the World golf tournament, the first round of which was completed on the hilly Purloy Downs course in the Surrey Hills. A big crowd followed his ding-dong fight with tlie Irishman Nolan, who did so well ill the early stages of the open championship. It was touch and go all tlie way. They were all square at the thirteenth. Nolan lost through his approaches overrunning the last two greens. The biggest surprise was the defeat of Perry, who reached the final in 1932. Rees nearly threw the match away after being 2 up with 3 to play. Padgham, one of tlie strongest challengers, did the first nine holes in 32, and gave a delightful display of smooth, controlled hitting. C. A. Whitcombe began brilliantly with 3 4 3 23, which was six strokes under bogey. He took only 31 for the first nine holes yet was only 2 up. He later won four successive holes. Rees, who beat Perry, is a 20-year-old Welshman. Another of the surprises was the defeat of Vardon by Watts. Results are: —Padgham beat Smith 5 and 4; Hodson beat Gadd at tlie 19th; W. Davies beat Frostick 6 and 4; E. Whitcombe beat Ganden 1 up; C. Whitcombe beat Robson 6 and 4; Cotton beat Nolan 2 up; Kenyon beat Faulkner 2 and I; Alliss beat Walker 5 and 4; Rees beat Perry at the 19th; R.
