GARRISON BAND CARNIVAL.

On September 27, 28, 29 and SO a carnival will be held by the Garrison Band in the Empire Hall. The object aimed at is to provide a set of new instruments for the bandsmen and an energetic committee has for some time been working to make the function a success. The instruments at present in use have rendered long service in providing music arid entertainment for the citizens, but are now giving evidence of the symptoms- of old age. The band, under the conductorship ot Mr C. Pike, has, since ho took charge, made great progress. Commencing with a band largely composed of junior players, Mr Pike has, by careful and conscientious training, produced an organisation which is worthy of Palmerston North and which should occupy a very liigh place amongst the first-class bands in Now Zealand. It will be fresh in the memory cf :i.e citizens that last January the junior Garrison Band won the quickstep aim the test selection for G grade bands at the Napier contest and received unstinted praise from tho judge for the way in which, tno.- test selection was played. The bandsmen, however, are at a great disadvantage in not having good instruments to enable them to display to tho full the talents they undoubtedly possess. The Garrison Band is tho pioneer band of the city and has always given freely its services to the citizens. For some years, _in addition to many other gratuitous services, it has provided at least 26 Sunday concerts each year in the Esplanade and in the Square, and these concerts havo been appreciated. Tho band has made few calls on tho public in tho past for financial or other assistance and it feels that in making this appeal tho people of Palmerston North will not be unmindful of their duty to assist this worthy local institution. The Citizens’ Committee and tho bandsmen therefore confidently look forward to the wholehearted support of the people at this carnival.
