It was accordingly decided to enter three teams in the competitions and to support the suggestion advanced by the Combined Services Club that a senior B competition be inaugurated. In the event of the competition being introduced, it was suggested that the matches be of two days duration, that the junior competition be ol one day, and that the club enter a team in each grade. The subscription was fixed as under: —Senior, 30s (reduced to 25s if paid bv the end of November); junior, 20s (reducible to 15s). Tuesday and Thursdav evenings were selected as practice nights. It was decided to set up a material committee, which is to consist of two members from each team, it being the committee’s duty to issue the material on Saturdays and practice nights and to maintain a fitting supply. It was left to the management committee to make the appointments. Votes of thanks were extended the honorary auditor, the honorary secretary, Miss Cooksley for the assistance she had rendered to the secretary in respect to the typing of the reports and balance-sheet, and to Mrs Heaphy for her valued assistance in connection with the afternoon tea arrangements at the Sportsground. The business of the meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman and to Messrs Mansford and Glendinning for the use of their office as a meeting place. COMBINED SERVICES CLUB. LAST SEASON REVIEWED. “It is pleasing to review our second successful season,” says the annual report of the president of the Combined Services Cricket Club (Colonel J. H. Whyte). From a playing point of view the weather was everything that could be desired, and only one Wednesday was lost during the season. Although not successful in winning the Wednesday competition, we had the satisfaction of again being runners-up, and scored 45 points to the winning team’s 46£. We must heartily congratulate the Optimists Club on their success in again winning the competition. After the season had commenced it was found necessary to enter a second team in the competition, and although this team was mostly composed of young players, they did remarkably well and had some meritorious wins to their credit. “We must congratulate the following players on being chosen to represent the Manawatu Wednesday representatives: —H. Childs, J. A. McGavin, N. Quigan, E. A. Heaphy and P. McMinn. “The best averages in the A team were as follow: —Batting: W. Wilson 6 81 (248 runs), D. Davis 27.9 (251 runs) ; H. Childs 26.6 (372 runs) and L. Hart 22.4 (291 runs). Bowling: J. McMinn took 44 for the remarkably low average of 5.4 runs. Others were: D. Davis, 41 for 8.3; W. Wilson, 19 for 8.9; H. Childs, 33 for'll.1; and N. Quigan, 34 for 11.4. It is regretted that the figures for the B’s are not available, but those who did well are: —Batting: Downes, Eliott, Grey and Andrews. Bowling: Grey, Andrews, Downes and Woodley. “The club’s financial position is not in the sound state it was last year, and it remains for the members to put their shoulders to the wheel and wipe out the present deficit. The thanks of the club are due to those gentlemen who kindly assisted us with donations. Our. grateful thanks are also due to our batting coach (Mr F. Holz) who gave up so much of his valuable time to the members in teaching them correct batting. Much of the' success of our players was due to his coaching, and his valuable advice will be greatly missed this year. We extend to him our wishes for a successful season in his new town. Our thanks are also due to Mr W. Wilson on Mr Holz’s departure, for the way in which he so ably filled the breach and looked after the A team, and also to Mr G. Grey for the interest shown in the B’s. This year the club hope to extend their operations and enter teams in the Saturday competitions and a very successful season is anticipated. Now that the club have put down a concrete pitch, lit with ilood lighting, members will be able to commence their practices earlier in the season, and will also be able to practise at night. Good coaches have been secured, and it is hoped that members will take advantage of the facilities offering to better themselves in the good old game.” PLUNKET SHIELD. Per Press Association. AVELLINGTON, Sept. 18. The opinion was expressed at a meeting of the management committee of the AVellington Cricket Association this evening that the association should have the first call on all players under its jurisdiction for representative matches, and it was decided to write to all minor associations in the AVellington Plunket Shield area asking them to subscribe to this view'. Mr K. H. Tucker was appointed sole selector of the representative teams.
