JUBILEE FUNCTION.

AUCKLAND RUGBY UNION. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Sept. 16. Almost every Rugliy Union in New Zealand was represented at a dinner given last evening by the Auckland Rugby Union in celebration of its jubilee year. Special honour was paid to Mr J. Arneil, who has been associated with the union ever since its formation in 1883, and is now the president. The Mayor, Mr G. Hutchison, who presided, said that Rugby had been one of the greatest factors in' securing the recognition of New Zealand overseas. Sir James Gunson said the history and traditions of New Zealand football were ingrained into the sinew, bone and brain of the people of the Dominion. He complimented Mr S, S. Dean, the chairman of the New Zealand Union, on his work in that position. He said Mr Dean was associated with the great 1924 team, but he (the speaker) would not admit that it was as good as the 1905 team. He was, however, confident that New Zealand would produce a better team than either of these. Other speakers included Messrs Dean (Wellington), G. H. Mason (Canterbury) , P. Sheehan (Otago), J. Prendeville (Wellington), H. Frost and F. Sutherland (Auckland).
