SPRING BLOOMS

SANSON FLOWER SHOW. SPLENDID ARRAY OF NARCISSI. While modest in comparison- with the National Daffodil Show which immediately preceded it in Palmerston North, the annual display of spring flowers at Sanson, yesterday, held under the auspices of St. Thomas’s Anglican Church, made a very brave show. The outstanding feature was the array of daffodils, which included quite a number of examples of what modern methods in respect to hybridisation and propagation can attain, but the champion bloom came from the non-coloured section, being a magnificent specimen in pale lemon. The Challenge Cup, presented by the Ladies’ Guild, for most points in magni coronati and incomparabilis, went to Mrs J. L. Weightman, of Palmerston North, for the third successive year and this exhibitor lias now the trophy outright. The Challenge Vase for most points in the amateur classes went to Mrs Leicester, of Tangimoana, who also succeeded in winning the trophy for the third successive year. The dis2>lays from these two exhibitors made a wonderful and colourful picture in themselves. The A. W. Broadway Trophy for a collection of narcissi was awarded Basil Yorke who, for a young amateur, showed wonderful promise in the art of flower cultivation. His effort, incidentally, saved all the major honours from being taken by exhibitors from beyond the environs of the district. Two trophies, the one being donated by Mrs L. E. Ellerm for most points in decorative flowers, and the other offered by Mrs Leicester for a bowl of daffodils, were annexed by Mrs W. J. Croucher, of Palmerston North. However, the points prizes in the vegetable and domestic sections were won by home exhibitors, Mr H. Pearce scoring heavily in vegetables, while Mesdames Hope and H. Williams, both of Sanson, secured the two trophies in the other section for baking and preserves respectively. The display was excellently arranged under the direction of Rev. B. White (president) and Mr G. T. Francis (hon. secretary), who were given valued assistance by Mr J. M. Croucher, as assistant secretary, and Mesdames W. Rowan, Francis, Masters and J. Bowater and Miss E. Penny, as stewards. In conjunction with the display, a band of willing helpers conducted various stalls, as under: Sweets, Miss E. Hope; novelty, MrsG. Drew and Miss P. Hope; refreshments, Mesdames Adams, Ellerm, E. Bowater, Leat, Bradley and Gedye; produce, Mesdames Hope, W. J. Croucher, Grace and Miss N. Penny. An exhibit, which attracted considerable attention was that of an ornamental broom which presented unusual features in respect to colouring. In lieu of the more common yellow and yellow and red flowers, the petals were of a rich maroon, shading to lemon pink on the inside. The broom, which was on exhibit for the first occasion, was the result of intense hybridisation by Mr F. Mason, of Feilding. THE PRIZE LIST.
