MANAWATU COUNTY

MEETING OE THE COUNCIL. The Manawatu County Council held its monthly meeting at Sanson, yesterday, Cr. W. E. Barber presiding. Also present were Crs. J. H. Perrett, W. E. Pearce, J. Boyce and N. Alorcom.

CORRESPONDENCE. From Air J. C. Glover, secretary of the' Ilongotea Cemetery Board, asking the council to accept the appointment of Messrs A. Simonson and J. C. Glover to the boaid in conformity with the resolutions carried at a meeting held on Alarcli 23 last. To he dealt with on the council's authority being gazetted. From Mr AV. V. Kingsh.eer, Palmerston North, drawing attention to the road drain fronting his property on Taylor’s Line.—Referred to Hie engineer.

From Air C. 11. Sliailer, Orona Downs, inquiring if the council was desirous of selling the windmill on the siding at Oroua Downs. —Left to the engineer to attend to. RATE ROLL. The following alterations were made on the county rate roll:—A. Jarvie Est. to S. V. Brightwell, sec. GO, blk. IV, Rangitoto S.D.; Wilfred Perry to J. W. Perry, secs. 2G2, 281, 283-4 and 293, township of Carnarvon; Levin and Co., Ltd., to New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Dist. Co., Ltd., lots 1 and 2 township of Sandon; T. AV. Hughes to F. G. Smith, pt. sec. 38, Douglas block. TREASURER’S REPORT. Air A. K. Drew reported as under on the county finances; —County fund account, debit, £13,163 14s 8d ; loan account, credit, £2141 18s sd; net debit balance, £11,021 16s 3d. In reply to a question Air Drewsaid the debit balance at present was about the same as that of last year at the same period. r ihe rate notices would be going out shortly. The following amounts were shown as available for expenditure in the ridings;—Sandon, £142 3s Id; Alt. Stewart, £lO7 3s Id; Waitohi. £172 7s Id; Rongotea. £238 4s lOd; Carnarvon, £143 18s 4d; Kawa Kawa, £339 j.6s 3d; Awahou, £292 Is ]od. The report was adopted.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. All- H. V. Bond, county engineer, reported as follows: “Ridings.—Sandon: The power grader has been operating on meet of the roads. Several slips have been cleaned away oil Kakariki Road A little patching lias been undertaken oil Ngaio Road and Ohakea Road. The township roads have been patched arid a little chaining has been undertaken on Cemetery Road. Alt. Stewart: A wooden culvert in Wells Street has been repaired. Rata Street has been patched. Watertables have been cleaned in Pirinoa Road and Rata Street. Metalling has been continued on Lees Line and a start lias been made with patching the Alt. SlewartAlt. Biggs Road. Grading has been continued. Waitohi: Surface patching has been carried out en Pcujuy’s, Hammond’s and Rowe’s Roads. The usual surface grading has been continued on several toads and the grass sides have been cut out on Fairfield Road. Rongotea; The usual general maintenance, drain cleaning and surface grading has been continued. Surface metal lias been spread on 'lompkin's Line. Carnarvon ; The grass sides of Sliailer’s and Puki Puki Roads have been cut out with tho power grader; surface grading has been continued. llosina and Koputara Roads have been patched. Kawa Kawa: Two earthenware pipe culverts have been taken out of Cooper's Lino and have been replaced by concrete pipes; also one concrete pipe culvert lias been lowered on this line. Surface metal lias been spread on Pykc’s. and Bainesse Roads. The usual surface maintenance has been continued. Awahou; A sand drift on No. 6 Line has boon fnecined. Wilson’s Road has been trimmed up and patched. Grading has been continued throughout. “Alain Highways.—A little surface patching lias been carried out on the bitumen surface of the Himatangi-Rangiotu Road. Alctal patching lias been undertaken on the Whirokino, Fox ton Beach, Tanginioana, Himatangi-Rangiotu, Himatangi - Sanson and Fciiding-Awahuri Roads. Grading has

been continued on all metal surfaced highways. The traffic pegs have been set back on Alt. Stewart. “General.—The 3000 pine trees came to band and have been planted. The Alt. Biggs reserve is now alincst completely planted. Some of the smallest trees have been planted on the Sanson township belt. Approximately 600 have been planted on the Ferry Reserve at Tangimoana by the lessee. The- 4000 feet of hardwood timber purchased from the Foxton Harbour Board has been delivered to the council yard. The engine shed at Longhurn has been dismantled and the materials brought to Sanson; 600 cubic yards of metal has been taken from the crushing plant at Pukenui.” —Adopted.
