Mr A. W. Alewton, a popular member of the Public Service Association in Palmerston North, who i.s being transferred to the Christchurch branch of the State Fire Office, was met at afternoon tea in the Broadway Lounge yesterday by representatives from the various Government departments. Mr J. VV. Davidson, of the Public Trust Office, and chairman of the association, presided over the gathering and, in referring to the good service rendered by Mr Alewton to the community during the 10 years lie had been stationed in Palmerston North, mentioned that the guest of honour had been a member of the R.S.A. executive, secretary to the Palmerston North Golf Club, and chairman of the Public Service ’ Association branch on two occasions in the nine years lie had been attached to the executive. The speaker congratulated Air Alewton upon his promotion, but expressed regret that the promotion should entail his departure from their midst. In acknowledging the tribute, Mr Alewton stated that he was leaving Palmerston North with very sincere regret, for he had made many good friends, both within and outside the service. Air T. L. Sentor, manager of the local branch of the State Fire Office, and Air H. O’. R. Blackwood, chief clerk in the same office, both of whom were recently transferred to this centre from Invercargill and Hamilton respectively, were extended a welcome at the gathering.
