RELIEF FROM RATES.

DEADLOCK AT THAMES'. Per Press Association. THAMES, Sept. 12. A representative meeting of ratepayers considered the reply of the Borough Commissioner, Mr Grange, to the deputation seeking substantial relief from rating. The Commissioner said he could promise no immediate relief and said that deputations were not only ineffective but harmful. He deprecated the undue publicity which, he considered, was inclined to grossly exaggerate the position. The meeting decided to call a further public meeting of ratepayers on Monday and invite the Commissioner, the Mayor and Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., to be present and pass a resolution to be presented to Cabinet seeking the relief which it is considered the Thames Borough Commissioner Act does not provide, as promised.
