PAHIATUA, Sept. 11. Mrs L. Vile and Mrs 0. Johnson, who have been spending a week in Napier, have returned homo. Mrs A. D. Bauckham, of Mangatainoka, and Miss H. M. Pringlo, of Pahiatua, are spending a few days at Manawatu Heads. Miss G. Jowitt, of Eketahuna, is an inmate of a private hospital. Nurse Suisted is visiting Wellington, whore she is staying with Mrs S. Wilson. Mrs J.. D. C. Crewe, Wakeman Street, is visiting Auckland. Miss Linda Herbert, Nelson, is the guest of Mr and Mrs L. T. Herbert, Tiraumea Road. Miss M. Suisted, Tyndal Street, is spending a few days at Herctaunga. Miss M. Major has been appointed sole teacher at Kaitawa.

The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua County Council was field on Saturday. There were present: Crs A. W. Bissct (chairman), C. Hodgins, T. Fouhy, Felix Bolton, F. T. Ilornc, F. V. Bryant, C. Lassen, H. R. Wbitta and J. It. Nelson. Beforo commencing the business the chairman extended a warm welcome to a now membor, Cr Felix Bolton, remarking, however, that he was sorry ho could not welcome him under happier circumstances. He knew that ho would do his utmost to fill well tho position so ably held by his late father, Cr S. Bolton. Tho Main Highways Board intimated that it had granted maintenance subsidies as follow: Wellington-Napier Main Highway, £2579 2s 8d (£3 for £1) ; No. 61 Pahiatua-Pon-garoa Highway, £774 19s 5d (£3 for £1) ; No. 84 Pahiatua Station Road, £94 (£3 for £1) ; No. 342 Makuri-Ongaha Road, £564 17s 9d (£3 for £1) ; No. 442 Mangaone A r alley, £SOB 2s 4d (£3 for £1). In rcforcnco to tho No. 15 Highway, Pahiatua County-Konini Gorge, widening and transport of spoil, the Public Works Department advised that the Highways Board was unable to subsidise transport costs in connection with tho widening by relief labour under the supervision of tho council. A copy of the Main Highways Estimates for 1933-34 included the following amounts: Pahiatua Station Highway, £1333 (£3 for £1); Mangaono Valley Highway-Mangara-marnma bridge, £656 (£2 for £1). It was decided that particulars of the council’s requirements be forwarded to the Main Highways Board in the matter of a road roller. It was decided that on receipt of tho monetary authority authorising expenditure on the construction of the Mangaramarama bridge tenders ho called for its erection. In his report the treasurer (Mr J. Hutton) said :■ —“On behalf of the employees of the county, I would respectfully state how much we deplore the passing of our esteemed friend, the late Mr Samuel Bolton. We learned to honour and respect him both in his official capacity and in his privato life, because of his outstanding ability and his upright demeanour in all his actions. We feel that in his demise we have indeed lost One who was ever willing to serve and serve faithfully, in tho interests of all.”

A meeting of the executive of the Pahiatua Boxing Club was held on Saturday evening, when Mr A. P. Jenson presided. The financial position in connection with the recent professional contest was presented by the secretary. Tho net receipts, after deducting tax, were £54 10s 2d, and tho expenses, including permit fee £2; 2 per cent, of net receipts and 5 per cent, of purse to New Zealand Boxing Council, and 15 per cent, to the club, £24 3s, leaving £24 10s 2d to be divided between Ted Oxley and Johnny McKay, on a 60-40 basis.
