WOODVILLE.

WOODVILLE, Sept. 11. Although he had not been well for the past two months, the passing of Mr Janies Andrew early on Sunday morning came as a shock to his relatives and friends. Born in Takaka, Nelson, Mr Andrew came to Woodville about 26 years ago and took up a farm on Woodlands Road. In 1919 he retired and came to live in the town, residing at Fox Road until his passing. The late Mr Andrew was of a quiet and unassuming nature, but he took a great interest in his surroundings. He did not enter public life, nevertheless he made many lasting friendships and there are not a few who will regret his passing. There are left to mourn their loss, his wife, a brother, Mr T. Andrew (Bulls), and a sister in Blenheim. There are also five sons, James, Wallace, Gordon, Thomas and David; a daughter, Mrs G. Walther, of Troup Road, Woodville, and fivo grandchildren.

On the ground that accusations were being made that he was using his position as Mayor to have the uneniployed working on the streets, thus reducing the cest of the maintenance for the borough, Mr J. Elder resigned from the position of chairman of the Woodville Unemployment Committee at the meeting of that body on Friday. The proceedings were held in committee as is usual, and a statement was afterwards handed to the Press, announcing Mr Elder’s resignation. After l\lr Elder had made a statement, ho vacated the chair, Members of tho committee were unanimous in their expressions of confidence in him as chairman of the committee, and of his efforts on behalf of the unemployed of the district, asked him to reconsider his decision. Mr Elder stated that he had given the matter very serious consideration and had not come to his decision hastily. He thought that it would be better if he were not connected with the committee at all; however, seeing that the committee were anxious that he should continue in office, and were unanimous, he would reconsider the matter. It was decided to hold tho resignation over until the next monthly meeting of the committee. Mr Elder stated that he would give a decided answer before the next meeting. On Saturduy morning teams frqin the Woodvillo District High School played the Dannevirko South School teams at football and basketball. At football, Woodvine defeated South by 12 points to .5. In the A grade basketball match, Wooclvillc and South drew, with seven all. Woodville B team defeated South by 4 to 2, an email lie virek school's C team beat Woodville by 7 to 1. ’ Mr T. Fathers. District Secretary of the Independent Order of Rcchabites, who is in Woodville for tho celebration of the fifthv-fifth anniversary of the Woodville Tent, is the guest of Mr Edgar Harding.
