SUBSIDY ON BUILDING
APPLICATIONS POUII IN. ANALYSIS OP POSITION. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 12. Up to Friday last, the Dominion applications for the building subsidy totalled 5702, representing an expenditure of £2,037,000. If, as frequently stated, 87 per cent, of the value of any building in New Zealand goes indirectly, or directly, ill the wages spent in the country, then £2,489,000 will ultimately be paid in wages, the wages tax on which will be £124,000.
The Wellington railway station and Dunedin Post Office do not participate in the subsidy. They are not being built under the No. 10 scheme, but some other assistance will probably be given. Till Saturday the record of applications received at the board’s head office was 130, but on Saturday and Monday the totals were 260 and 500 respectively. To-day they are pouring in still faster.
