LOVELOCK LOSES.

ITALIAN’S GREAT WIN.

WORLD RECORD EQUALLED. LONDON, Sept. 9. At Turin, Luigi Beccali defeated J. E. Lovelock, the New Zealand runner, by five vards in tho final of the 1500 metres at the International University Games. The time was 3miri. 49 l-ssec., equalling Jules Ladoumegud’s world record. The duel aroused tremendous interest. The Italian set a terrific pace, dropping all except Lovelock. The pair at half-way were leading the ethers by 60 yards. Beccali three times attempted to drop tlie New Zealander, who responded gamely. Beccali, in a final sprint, won the finest race of his career. He finished strongly and afterward embraced and kissed Lovelock repeatedly.
