BALL AT PAHIATUA. RACE CLUB FUNCTION. Originality was strikingly displayed at the Pahiatua Racing Club ball, which was held in the Drill Hall on Friday night. The ceiling was effectively blotted out with lycopodium hung from wire strands and below the light canopy of greenery, in looped squares, were cut paper streamers in the club colours —purple and gold. Gold shades on the lamps heiglrtened the colouring above. The four walls were made to look like a proper race track. Practically no detail, to this end, was overlooked. Just above the heads of the sitting couples was a miniature racecourse with its green grass and double white rails circling the room. Above the green the blue sky lifted. The walls were done ill panels to represent the various aspects of a course. 32verything was drawn I meticulously, to scale and cleverly cut out from paper. At vantage points round the track a corner in perspective of the stewards’ stand, the main stand, and the judge’s box, etc., could be glimpsed. On the southern wall, for nearly its full length stretched the stables with the doors of each loose box, some open, some half-open and the others closed. Above the sixteen stalls, designed so realistically, were the names of local hoi’ses and owners extending over a long period of years which gave it a local toucli and offered a tribute to district sportsmen. On the track itself horses galloped, stood or paraded, looking remarkably realistic with their jockeys in bright colours, saddle-cloths and all. A fictitious field for “the Pahiatua Cup” was also set out with some of the stewards filling the position of the jockeys. The orchestral stage was on two levels and the piano and effects were mounted on the rear raised portion lending a distinctly modern touch. A spacious chaperones’ corner close by was luxuriously carpeted and furnished. Bowls of flowers stood at vantage points. Additional lights were installed to throw into relief the features on the walls and presenting in all a wonderful spectacle the like of which has never been seen in this or perhaps any neighbouring town. The president, Mr 11. McSherry, and Mrs McSherry, who were assisted by the other officers and tlieir ladies, made everyone feel at home, and it was largely due to them that the gathering was an outstanding social success.

Visitors from Palmerston North included Mrs Keith Garner, Mrs A, AA 7 . Yortt, Mrs L. Power and MisseS AV. Mackay, Thirtle, E. Trask, E. Macmillan, M. McLean, J. Reid, J. Blackwood, V. Berryman, L. Colley and D. McAllister.
