LASHED BY STORM
NORTHERN SHIPPING DISORGANISED. DESTRUCTION AT AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Sept. 11. The violent easterly gale which raged throughout the week-end abated early this morning, but intermittent rain continues. The steamer Ka-retu. from Suva, ran into a storm at four o’clock yesterday morning and some of her cargo of bananas and other fruit shifted In the hold and was smashed. The ship was struck by extra big seas yesterday and a big pot of boiling soup was hurled off the galley stove, scalding the cook about the back. The steamer Narbada encountered stormy weather all down the coast on Saturday, and, though she arrived at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, it was two hours later before she could be berthed. The steamer Canadian Victor, from Montreal, arrived yesterday morning and the port health officer made three attempts to board the ship from his launch, but failed, and the ship was not berthed till this morning. The cruisers Dunedin and Diomede were due to sail this morning, but postponed their departure till the conditions moderated.
Damage done on shore by the storm was chiefly confined to wireless aerials, verandah awnings and ga-rdens. Fruitgrowers report less damage than was expected. At the Takanini training track the gale ripped the roof off horse stalls and hurled the timber and iron for 73 yards. The damage is estimated at £IOO.
The steamer Golden Rod, due from Los Angeles to-day, wirelessed at 10 o’clock this morning that she was hove to 50 miles off Cuvier Island. The time of her arrival is uncertain.
The steamer Wingatui and the tanker Willy, both due this morning, will arrive this afternoon.
SIGN BLOWN DOWN
AT DUNEDIN

DUNEDIN, Sept. 11. A high wind last night caused the crash of a big, expensive electric advertising sign of a railway train which had been erected for the publicity branch of the Railways Department on the top of a five storey building in the city. The sign fell on to an adjoining building, partly damaging two chimneys and the roof. The sign is a badly tangled mass of metal.
