DAMAGE BY WIND
HURRICANE IN BAHAMAS.
LOSS OF LIFE. FLORIDA COAST REACHED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Received September 5, 11.24 a.m. RUGBY, Sept. 4. A telegram from the officer administering the Government of the Bahamas ,to tire Colonial Office reports that a small boat off Acklins informed the s.s. Chestersen that the hurricane on August 31 resulted in extensive damage to the property of the informants.
Five persons were reported dead and eight missing. According to Press messages, the hurricane, after striking Cuba, where many lives were lost, turned north-east, passing close to Nassau, in the Bahamas.
The wind did considerable damage to the buildings, including the wire r less station, but no deaths were reported.
The hurricane caused severe damage when it reached West Palm Beach (Florida} and it headed inland. Communication with large areas lias temporarily ceased.
UNITED STATES THREATENED. HAVANA, Sept. 3. Incomplete reports received over disrupted communications stated that between 600 and 1000 were injured by the hurricane in the Santa Clara and Matanzas provinces. The hurricane is now threatening the eastern coast of Florida and the southern coast of Texas and Louisiana.
