CLEANING OF DAM.
PREPARATIONS TO RESUME. Preparations are being made by the Palmerston North City Council to again undertake cleaning operations in the basin behind the Tiritea dam. This announcement was made by the engineer (Mr J. R. Hughes) at the meeting of the council held, last evening, when he stated that the work would probably occupy eight or ten weeks. The clearance of silt was suspended with the advent of the warm weather last year, when partly done, and the period in which the work could be undertaken was limited. Cr. H. B. Free said that some discolouration in the city water supply had been noticeable after recent heavy rains, and he asked if the filters had been flushed, as arranged. The engineer replied that all fourteen filters were cleaned every three days under ordinary conditions, and on other occasions after every ‘ heavy rain.
