EARTHQUAKE AT SEA.
SHIP NORTHUMBERLAND SHAKEN.
Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Mav 23
When the steamer Northumberland was 270 miles from Auckland at 8.37 last Sunday night, distinct earthquake tremors were experienced for twelve seconds. They were apparently caused by the movement of the sea bed and the ship vibrated from stem to stern. A radio inquiry of the steamer Mahia, then 180 miles south of the Northumberland, elicited the information that nothing unusual had been noticed.
It will be recalled that the Northumberland was lying in the roadstead at Napier when the disastrous Hawke’s Bay earthquake occurred.
