GOLF.

"WILS r ON CUP MATCH. WANGANUI BEAT MANAWATU. After an interesting struggle, the Wanganui Golf Club’s team were successful in retaining the Wilson Cup against Manawatu on the Hokowhitu links at the week-end, the visitors winning by five matches to four with three halved. The teams consisted of 12 men a-side with Silk,*.the Kirk-Windeyer representative, playing first man for Wanganui. He was opposed by L. Seifert, junr., the Manawatu club champion, and brilliant golf resulted, the local player registering a wonderful 35 on the outward journey to be 4up at the turn. But for missing an easy, putt for a win at Monro’s he would have been 5 up. Silk then struck top form and, by taking the next three holes and the 16th, drew upon terms with two holes to go. The 17th was halved and when Seifert hooked his drive deep into the rough, Silk was in a promising position for the victory. However, lie hooked his iron over behind the bunker to the left of the green and the game was again in the balance. Seifert played a typical approach shot pin high to the right, Silk replying with a chip which still left him a long putt. Seifert’s putt stopped on the lip and the hole was halved in fours, tho match being squared after a great struggle for supremacy. Their cards were: Seifert.- —-Out: 4 4 434454 3 35. In: 4 4 4 6 4 5 6 4 5—42. .Silk.—Out: 55534554 3—39. In: 4 3 3 5 4 5 5 4 5—38. Ekstedt and U. G. Williams fought a hard game all the way, although the honours eventually went to the visitor by three and one. Williams was rarely off the line and he gave nothing away once he was within range of the pin. Ekstedt was favouring his left foot, and this cost him a lot of length off the tees, but lie was round in 79 and playing well enough to keep Williams extended. Ekstedt allowed too much for the wind with his second at Land’s End, which Williams won with an easy four. Ekstedt lipping tho hole with a long putt for the half. At Lagoon Hill Williams put down a long putt for the half, and he was still 2 up after Ti Ti’s, where Ekstedt, after a couple of weak shots, laid his fourth /alongside the pin. Williams increased his lead at Kraal, but Ekstedt got one back with a birdie at Barraud’s. The sixteenth was halved and Williams was dormy two. He ran down a long putt for a 3 and a win at the seventeenth, taking the match 3 and 1. The cards read: Williams. —Out: 44445 5 44 3 37. In: 5 4 3 5 4 5 5 3 4-38. The total was 75 and it would have been better but for bad luck at the tenth, where Williams had to play his second from a deep divot mark. Ekstedt.—Out: 44545554 3 39. In: 4535 54 5 4 5-40—79. K. Glendinning had a great match with E. C. Hutchison and the honours were shared. There were some bright patches and the game was keenly contested all the way. 'O. H. Williams was matched with M. Duncan and the game was in the balance until they readied the last green, where Duncan ran down the putt which gave him the hole and the match, the pair being square at the seventeenth. J. Goss, ex-amateur champion,, had to play good golf to defeat the young Manawatu player, F. Murray. Goss early established a lead of two, but Murray had an inspired patch which gave liim the eight, ninth, tenth and eleventh, and a lead of 2 up., Goss took the next two, however, and went on to play good golf which gave him the game. The club captain, C. G. Moore, was Ma.nawatu’s fifth string and he playedt. right up to' tho position, accounting for bis opponent, V. b. Howarth, after a solid round. CUP PLAY.
