(From Oar Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, May 8. Members of the Croquet Club spent a very happy afternoon at the residence of their president, Mrs A. H. Morgan, on Friday. Flag “500” occupied the early part of the afternoon and the winners, Mesdames Mason, Alexander and Terry, each received a small trophy. After afternoon tea the presentation of trophies won during the past season took place. In the unavoidable absence of the Mayoress (Airs E. Butt) through ill-health, Mrs Gainbrill, president of the Manawatu Croquet Association, presented the trophies as follow: Butt Cup, Airs Aiorgan; Roach Brooch, Mrs Mason; Blaikic Brooch, Mrs Roach; C grade championship (Airs Leng-Ward's trophy), Airs B. G. Taylcr; 20 minute competition, points prize, senior, Airs Braun; junior. Airs Terry. Closing day trophies: Angles, Airs Brann; hoop target. Airs Long-Ward: ring target, Mrs 'J erry ■ ladder, Airs Roach; French, Airs Moynihaii; golf croquet. Miss Aim; hurry scurry, Mesdames Alason and Edginton A “jumbled menu” competition caused much interest and resulted: Airs Bovis 1, Mrs Snelling 2. A piano solo rendered .by Miss A. Aim was much enjoyed. Azotes of thanks to Airs Gainbrill and to the hostess concluded a jolly party. Convened by Air T. C. Tlnvaites, a meeting of those interested in draughts and chess was held on Thursday evening, when it was decided to form the Shannon Draughts and Chess Club. Twenty members joined, and it was arranged to hold in each week one night for beginners and ono general night. Air Tlnvaites was elected president and Air A. G. Mason secretary: these gentlemen, with Mr R. L. Tippler, to form the comrniitee. Air Tlnvaites was accorded a vote of thanks for bis initiative in calling the meeting, and doing the pioneer work in what promises to he a successful club. A meeting of the District Nurse Committee was bold on Friday evening, when Nurse Ford reported that she bad attended 29 patients in 20 davs._ Accounts were passed for payment totalling £77 12s 3d, including the 'first half years payment to the Palmerston North Hospital Board. On the Domain on Saturday Piinaliaii defeated Shannon 6-3 in the senior Rugby championship. The game, which was mostly a forward battle, was coni rolled by Alt* D. Cole. Broughton and Nopia scored for Punahau, while Shannon’s points were gained in a try by Tippler. Rev. 0. Young, vicar of Yen. Bede’s Church, made an appeal to the Christian charity of the church members in his sermon on Sunday evening in reference to the local winter relief appeal. He pointed out that Christian love meant justice and mercy extended to others, and all church members had a definite duty in this respect in the present times of stress. After the service the parishioners met. when the vicar placed before them a letter received from the local Unemployment Committee asking for the church’s cooperation and assistance. Afembers expressed sympathy with the appeal and a committee was set up to go into the question of ways and mean's. The school closed for the winter holidays on Friday. Air and Airs A. H. ATorgan arc spending the vacation with relatives in Ranglwaliia. All'S H. Blyth. of Alangaore. and Alls C. Stern and Aliss Nancy Easton Buckley are spending a holiday at AA aiakanae.
