MANAWATU COUNTY

MEETING OF THE-COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held al Sanson yesterday, Cr. W. E. Barbel being in the • clinir. Also present were Crs. J. F. McKelvie, J- HPerrett, IV. E. Pearce, J. Boyce, N. Morcom and D. IV. Reid.* CORRESPONDENCE. From tho Public Trustee, forwardcopy of the Interest Reductioi and Loans Conversion Act.—lt wnt agreed that there was no immediab hurry for action towards conversion tire county clerk reporting that step:were being taken in lino with the re quirements of the Act. . From the Main Highways Boarci asking the council to forward its re commendations regarding any road tho council wished to be declare< main highways.—A report on tin highways in the county was placet before the meeting by the enginee: and considered. From the Wanganui District Sam Dune Afforestation Committee with suggestions regarding the Manawatr County Council entering the arecovered by the operations of th< committee*.—Held over pending thr receipt of further information. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Mr H. V. Bond, county engineer, made the following report:— ..... Main Highways. —Tho cno mile of uux-m----place bituminous surfacing on the Himatangi cud of the Himataiigi-R-angiotu mam highway has been completed, and is now under maintenance by tho contractor. Ihe road is now hardening and presents a very good running surface. f i he Himatangi-San-son Road and the metalled portion of the IliinataJigi-Rangiotu Road have been repaired and surtuco metal spread. An ini apeetion has been made of the \\ hiroI kino bridge and a report will be forthcoming within a few days. Hie langimoana highway has been patched. The usual maintenance work, drain cleaning and surfacing grading has been continued jon all other main highways. The steel piaio girder bridge over the Manawatr I Hiver on the Shannon Road has been in j speeted. and evidence of rust and sealing is very noticeable. A gang of men are now engaged in scraping, chipping and spot-painting all tho steel work. Boits ar being tightened and all necessary adjustments and repairs are being put in band. Ridings.—ln the Sandon riding the low places on a short stretch of the Ohakea Road have been banked and built up with metal. Wightman’s and Ngaio Roaus have been patched. Grading has been carried out on tho following roads: Taylor's, Old River, McDoniicl’s, Richardson's, Gust's and Ohakea. Two bridges on Wi.son’s Road have been restricted to 3-ton loads and one bridge on Cemetery Read to o-tou loads. The banking work on the Ivawa Kawa Road in tho Mt. Stewart riding has been proceeded with by unemployed labour from Seilding. The usuai drain cleaning is now in progress throughout the riding, and the following roads have been graded: Kowhai Ranfurly and Mt. Biggs-lialcombe. In the Waitohi riding, dram and culvert cleaning has been proceeded with cn Banks-Waitohi, Hammond's, Taipo and Penny's Ronds. The decking of a small bridge on Banks-Wai-tohi Road has been repaired. The following roads in the riding have been graded: Penny's, Hammond's, Taipo and Taipoi Awahuri. After testing tho foundations for replacing tho small wooden bridge with a concrete structure on Kaimatarau Road, by Mr F. Burgess's property in tho Rongotea riding, it has been decided to install a double row of 60-inch diameter concrete pipes. This work is now being put in hand. The usual drain and culvert cleaning has been completed on BanksWaitohi, Tompkins, Kaimatarau and Leon's Roads and a portion of Mill Road. A small bridge on Banks Lino has been repaired, ana Milner's, Banks, Sanson's and Banks-Waitohi Roads have been graded. In the Carnarvon Riding several sandblows have occurred on the Ocean Beach Road, which have been repaired: tho metal surface has also been patched. Shailer's Road has been cut out with the grader and Rosina. Koputaru, Lake, Puki Puki and Soldier's Roads have been graded. In the Kawa Kawa riding tlu usual maintenance has been proceeded with. Drain cleaning lias been undertaken on Tr.ikorea, Pyko’s, Cooper's and lvcllow's Reads. The metal on Downs Read is being raked into the wheel _ ruts and general repair work is proceeding. The following roads have been graded: Kellow's, Cooper's, Milner’s and Saunders’s. Drain cleaning is proceeding _on Nos. 1 and 2 Lines in the Awahou riding. No-. 1,2 and 6 Lines have been graded. General maintenance and drain and culvert cleaning are being put in hand on other riding roads, and metal repairs are to be carried out.

General. —Sign posts have been erected in connection with the restriction of leadon the Bulls bridge: heavy traffic over 5 tens is being diverted to the Kakaraki bridge from the top of Mt. Stewart. Arrangements have been made to commence metal repairs ou the Main Drain Road. The report was adopted. TRAMWAY REPORT.

Mr A. Iv. Drew, tramway manage; reported on the working of the count' tramway for March as under: —Tlichief items of traffic for the montl were: Grain. 4$ tons; minerals and manure, 170$ tons; general merchan dise, 7 tons; eggs, 99 crates: sheei and pigs, 33 trucks: metal, etc., 8? trucks; posts, 1 truck; cement, 1 truck; wool. 94 bales. The accounts show a credit balance of £22 8s 5T for the month’s working.—Adopted. RATE ROLL. Alterations were authorised as follow to the county rate roll:—H. A. Behrendt Est. to A. C. Behrendt, pt. sec. 11, township of Carnarvon; J. Jakobsen to J. M. Swenson, pt. section 334, township of Carnarvon. RATE COLLECTOR'S REPORT. Mr A. Anderson made the following report on the county rates: General rates: Struck, £13,196 11s: collected, £9798 10s od ; 12$ per cent rebate. £469 15s* Id; 3 per cent, rebate. £ll4 14s 3d: outstanding £2812 11s 3d. Hospital rate: Struck. £2409 19s 6d • collected. £1962 4s 5d : outstanding. £447 15s Id. Special rates: Struck. £1370 7s 2d: collected £1077 17s 4d; outstanding, £292 9? lOd. Total current rates outstanding £3553 ISs 2d. Arrears: Outstanding for 3 years at March 31. 1932. £2275 9s sd: collected £ll2B 7s 4d: now outstanding £ll4B 2s Id. The proportion of current rates collected is about 80 per cent, of the total struck. This includes the rebate for payment within 30 days.—Adopted.
