EDUCATION BOARD.

AIONTHLY AIEETING. The monthly meeting of tho Wanganui Education Board was held on Wednesday, afternoon. Air E. F. Hemingway presided, others present being Colonel J. H. Whyte, Alessrs AI. H. Oram, A. S. Coleman, J. Aitken, It. Dukeson, T. Benefield and P. Munro. Tire Lytton Street School Committee was granted the sum of £3 to be used in repairing a boundary fence at tho school.

It was decided to apply to the Education Department tor a portable school to be used at Orangopango soldiers’ settlement. A considerable discussion took place before the decision was reached, as it was uncertain whether it would be better to lease or acquire an area of land. The difficulty was, that the land was held by tlie Crown and any improvements olfected would be lost to the board. It was considered that a portable school would meet the requirements.

Tire Ohakea committee wrote complaining of the inadequate water supply at the school, and suggested tho installation of an electric motor pump in place of the windmill. In view of the fact that it is desired to supplement the pumping power nt Ohakune, the windmill tram Ohakea is to be removed and an electric motor pump installed. It was reported that it was proposed to carry out repairs and maintenance work at Makino Road, Dunoily, Stanway, Beaconsfield, Cheltenham, Lytton Street, Parewanui, Bulls, Ohakea, Sanson, Clydesdale, Alt. Biggs, Aloutoa, Foxton, Bainesse, Rangiotu, Kairanga, Linton, Tiritea, Fitzlierbert East, Ashhurst, Taonui. Comment was passed by Mr Coleman on the unsightly unlined entrances and corridors in many schools, and asked if it would be possible to remedy the position. Mr Hodge said that now materials and labour were cheaper it would he a good time to do the work. Tho chief inspector is to report on the advisability of permitting the Women’s Institute at Bulls to use the cookery room and utensils for cookery lessons. It was decided that the Christian Brethren could have the use of the Hnnterville school for their Easter camp, if the Hnnterville committee approved. It was recommended that the Russell Street committee apply for an additional fuel storage shed when the financial position is more stable. At present the board considered that the present storage shed must suffice.
