OROUA DOWNS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) OROUA DOWNS, Feb. 9. March Ist will be a day of distinction for Oroua, Downs and eiirroiindin'g districts as the Oroua Downs Sports Club will hold their 17th annual sports-.meeting on that date at the Sportsground. The club was inaugurated during the war and the funds wore used for patriotic purposes, but the events proved so popular that it was decided to continue the fixture indefinitely. To-day the club has assets valued at nearly £I,OOO. The healthy state of the finance is due to the pioneers who worked untiringly to ensure success. The meeting has the assistance of some fifty odd members of the club who live in the district, these men preparing the grounds and' carrying out official duties during the sports day. The total membership is approximately 200. The club is one of two in New Zealand to hold permits from the New Zealand Racing Conference and from the Trotting Conference, enabling some very good novelty events to be featured on the programme. The total prize money is £IOO, which has not been reduced despite the depression. On the other hand entrance fees have been redued. All the events are post entry; several cups are to bo won outright, and one challenge cup to be won and hold for the ensuing year. Highland dancing and Athletic events are also on the programme for which handsome prizes are offered. The club is arranging for the usual tearooms on the grounds. Admission has been reduced and hot water will be free. A dance will be hold in the evening and one of the liveliest bands will provide enticing jazz to finish up the day. The committee are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a successful day.
