The Daily Telegraph’s naval expert eays instead of replying to the French battle-cruiser Dunkerque by building a similar vessel, for which the plans are prepared, Italy has decided to modernise four pre-war Dreadnoughts at a cost of several million pounds. It is anticipated that the speed will be increased from 21 to between 25 and 26 knots, almost as fast as the German pocket battleships, and only three knots behind the Dunkerque. NEW CRUISERS. CONTRACTS IN BRITAIN. LONDON, Feb. 8. ,The Admiralty has distributed £7,000,000 in naval contracts for the construction of a cruiser each at Greenock, the Tyne and Devonport. The flotilla leader Scotstoun and destroyers will be constructed at Birkenhead, Cowes the Clydebank and the Tyne; two sloops will be built at Southampton. The prospect of work has caused great rejoicing at these centres. The keel of a new cruiser was laid at Barrow yesterday. ■-
