Irish Free State election was as follows : De Valeraites 44 Cosgraveites 29 Independents 7 Labour 5 Centre ... 4 Independent Labour 1 Mr George Hegan, Minister of Justice. has been elected. The gains are as fo'low: - —De Valera Party 3, Centre Party 2, Independents 1. The losses are:—Cosgraveites 6. Members elected include Mr Derring, Minister of Education, for Carlow, tlrs eighth Minister re-elected; Mr Norton, the Labour leader, for Kildare, and the Cosgraveite, General Sean McEoin, nicknamed the “Blacksmith of Ballinalee,” for Longford. and Mr G. Boland, Mr de Valera’s party secretary, for Roscommon. where Mr McDermott. Lender of the Centre Party, was not elected on the first preference. Those not elected include the Cosgraveites, Mrs O’Driscoh, an exmember of the Dail, for North Dublin and a sister of the late Michael Collins. DUBLIN, Jan. 26. There is little doubt that the do Valeraites are assured of a majority enabling them to go ahead with the Republican policy. An Phoblacht, the chief Republican newspaper, bodily claims: “Let’s bear no more of bargains with England. Instead, the rallying cry must be, ‘On to the Republic.’ ” . , Sean O’Kelly, speaking at Dublin tonight, said that the result of the election was going to have a tremendous effect on the future of Ireland and make it self-supporting and self-suffic-ing, with an industrial as well as an agricultural arm. Business men in Dublin are aghast at the result of the election, which they regard as a calamity, but admit it is useless to disguise the fact that the de Valeraite aggregate poll is greatly in excess of that at the last election and may easily finish independent of all the other parties. The trend of the election was reflected on the Dublin Stock Exchange where heavy selling in local securities, such as Guinness (ordinary) and Bank of Ireland stock, are seven •points lower. Guinness shares on the London Stock Exchange similarly fell from 85s to 78s 9d.
