EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JANUARY 27, 1903. A suggestion was on foot that the Manawatu River should be harnessed to light Pahiatua, Dannevirkc, Woodville and Palmerston North. About 3400 acres of land on Kapiti Island were to be offered at auction for grazing purposes, the lease, to be for seven years and the upset rental £IOO. The first portion of the ironwork of the Mangaweka viaduct (Main Trunk line) was in place and it was anticipated that the structure would take 18 months to complete. The Royal mail steamer Sonoma established a new record on the San Francisco-Auckland run by completing the trip in 15 days, 19 hours 20 minutes. During December 4188 persons arrived in the Colony aiid 1415 left, compared with 3307 and 1500 respectively in December, 1901. America had given an undertaking that the Panama Canal would be open for traffic within 14 years. It was reported from Rome that Stromboli was again active and that shakes were accompanying loud detonations.
