PERSONAL.
Rev. R. J. Howie, Presbyterian chaplain to the Wellington Regiment, has resigned his commission which he has held since 1926. Very Rev. C. W. Carrington, formerly Dean of Christchurch, has been appointed assistant priest at King’s Langley, Hertfordshire, England. Mr Elton G. Duthie, of Bunnythorpe, entered the Palmerston North Hospital yesterday and was operated on in the evening. He is progressing satisfactorily.
A London message states that the King has approved that Sir William Malcolm Hailey, of the Indian ■ Civil Service, who will have completed five years as Governor of the United Provinces in August, 1933, shall continue to hold the office of Governor until August, 1934. The death occurred at Dunedin yesterday, reports a Press Association message of Rev. A. M. Finlayson, of Maori Hill, in liis 88th year. The late Mr Finlayson studied for the Ministry of the Presbyterian Church and came to New Zealand in 1875. He was inducted to the parish of Waikouaiti in 1876 and remained there 40 years, when he retired from active work.
Mr W. A. Boden, acting chief inspector of schools for the Wellington district who has been transferred to the Auckland district, was farewelled at the monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board this week. The chairman, Mr T. Forsyth, and several other members of the board, referred to the excellent relationships which had existed between Mr Boden and tlxe teachers of the district.
Mr W. R. Mummery, F.1.C., of Wanganui, who has occupied the position of secretary of the New Zealand section of the Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland during the six years of its existence, did not seek re-election at last night’s annual meeting held in Palmerston North. Mr T. A. Glendinning, F.1.C., of Wellington, voiced the general regret of the members at Mr Mummery’s decision and paid a tribute to the excellence of his services which had been largely instrumental in building the New 'Zealand section to the dimensions it was to-day.
