MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Per Press Association

AUCKLAND, Jan. 26.

William George Norman Hutchison, a clerk, aged 28, pleaded guilty this morning to ten charges of stealing sums totalling £971 belonging to the Transport Board, by whom he was formerly employed. It was stated in evidence that accused disclosed the defalcations to an accountant and gave the fullest assistance to the police. For months he had been duplicating cheques, mostly for the sum of £l, £5, or £2, representing relief wage tax payments, subsequently cashing the cheques. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence. He was admitted to bail in £250.

Returning home at 9 p.m. yesterday, Mr C. M. Emanuel, of Remuera, found a tall man going through the pockets of some clothing in the hall. A struggle ensued and Mr Emanuel was joined by two of his sons. There was a further struggle in the drive where the man was held pending the arrival of the police. This morning William Prestong, aged 46, a carter, was remanded for a week on a charge of breaking and entering, and stealing a pair of gold sleeye links.
