MID-WEEK CRICKET

TWO SURPRISE REVERSES. CENTURY TO R. ELLIOTT. Matches in the mid-week cricket series were continued at the Sportsground, yesterday, under perfect conditions, the wickets being firm and

fast, while there was an entire absence of wind. The day was not without its surprises, for two of the higher placed teams, P.D.C. and Optimists, both suffered reverses. The actual leaders, Combined Services A., endeavoured to force a four point win over U.S.C. B, but the latter eleven made a determined second innings stand to save the extra point. One century was registered, R. Elliott, of Services B, playing a nice innings of 102 without being actually beaten. SERVICES A v. U.S.C. B.

Occupying a wicket at the eastern end of the oval, the game between Combined Services A and Unemployed Sports Club B team evolved into a battle for the additional championship point on the part of the former eleven and the latter team to prevent it. U.S.C. B took first strike, but failed

badly, being all out for 52, McClelland who contributed a “baker’s dozen,” being the only member to enter double figures, while “Mr Extras” topped the returns. Services A replied with 167 for the loss of sevfen wickets, at which stage they claimed the closure. Childs (6il and Hart (39 retired) were largely responsible for the compilation of the total which gave their side a lead of 115. At their second visit U.S.C. offered much stronger opposition, McClelland and Stewart getting into the 30’s, while Findlay placed 20 to his credit and Nelson was 19 not out. The call of time found the batting eleven with their deficiency wiped off, and they thus averted a four-point win, although the three points give Services A a substantial

lead in the series. Following are the detailed scores:— U.S.C. B. First Innings. for 25, while five other members returned double figures of more modest value. A splendid stand by' Elliott made victory assured for Services B, this batsman retiring late in the day with 102 to his credit, his total including no less than 20 fours. Downes (28), Tilson (22) and Dawick (11) also assisted to carry the total to 220 and the victory went to the lower placed team on the championship table by a margin of 113 runs in a single innings game.
