CARNIVAL SPIRIT.

The carnival spirit reigned at Hawern on Saturday when several thousands thronged the street for the open-air concerts and fancy dress dancing, which continued from 9.30 p.m. till midnight. Tho occasion was tho switching-on of the jubilee beacon installed to commemorate the borough jubilee of February last.
The beacon is formed by lights round the top of the water tower, ICO feet above the ground, and is said to he New Zealand’s highest sky sign. It will show each night from sunset to 2 a.m., and will be visible over a wide area. It has been charted by tho Alarine Department.
