EVENING ATHLETIC MEETING
The Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club advanced their series of evening meetings a further stage at the Sportsground last evening, when tome five cycling events and three running events took place. There was a large attendance of the public and some good races and close finishes were witnessed. Times were exceptionally fast. E. Lawrence again showed his riding ability when he won the fourmile event after giving away 200 yards to the second place rider. The results are as follow:
A grade cycle race (1 lap).—First heat: Astin 1, McKenzie 2; second heat, Dixon 1. Gardner 2; final, Astin (25yds) 1, Dixon (45) 2, McKenzie (45) 3, Gardner (20) 4; won by half a wheel, a length; time, 41sec. A grade (4 mile). —Lawrence (scr) 1, Astin (200) 2, Hobbs (300) 3, Pillinger (340) 4; won by half a length; three lengths; time lOmin. Bsec. B grade (1 lap).—O’Donnell 1, Anthony 2, Gardner 3. B grade (3 mile).—-Essex 1, Walker 2, Hayes 8. Time, 7min. 35sec. Boys’ race (2 laps).—Pritchard 1, Johnson 2 Goldfinch 3. Girls’ lOOvas flat race.—M. Straker 1, D. Ward 2. Boys’ 100yds flat race.—Fitzpatrick 1, Murphy 2. 100yds club race.—Dixon 1, Mutch 2, Quigan 3.
After the meeting had concluded, the club captain, Mr I. Ross, gave an interesting lecturette on the sport of cycling and the proper methods of training.
