SUPPIES OF MEAT.

PROVISION AFTER CHRISTMAS. HOSPITAL BOARD’S CONCERN. Information was received by the Palmerston North Hospital Board this afternoon that.the stocks of meat held by the Unemployment Board were nearing exhaustion, and the balance available was therefore being definitely allocated among recipients pro rata to the weekly supplies authorised. On the basis of that allocation, there would be iiOO carcases available after November 19, and it was suggested that issues be curtailed in order to continue supplies over the Christmas period. • • What 1 am concerned about is what provision has been made tor supplies of meat alter Christinas,” stated the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford). ‘‘The position here is going to be serious because the relief depot definitely has to close down at the end of December. We know that No. 5 scheme men simply cannot make ends meet, and personally I think that t|>e position is much more serious than most people imagine. We are unable to carry on the depot after December 31, and somebody will have to make provision. Married men cannot live on £1 a week and pay rent. The Government seem to forget that some further provision will have to be made, further, v single men here have been receiving is bd a week and I find they have been getting 12s Gd in Auckland. It is these inequalities of distribution which seem to be creating quite a lot of disturbance. I think this board should carry a resolution calling upon the Government to provide meat in the New Y Mr JA. Nash, M.P., stated that ho had asked a question in the House and had been informed by the Munster that it was hoped to arrange for the acquisition of meat, but a resolution should certainly be sent by the board. The managing-secretary (Mr A. J. Phillips) stated that the distribution of meat was one of the mam things. u l think something must be done, stated Mr G. P. Catley. “The trouble is that Ministers are never in a huiTy about these things, said Mr J. Boyce. The Mayor moved a resolution to the effect that the board viewed with alarm the fact that no provision had been made for meat supplies aftei l)e----ceml>er 31 and urged the Government to continue to purchase supplies for next winter, at the end of which the matter could be reviewed Mr Nash: That should be sent to the Minister with a request for an immediate reply. Mr G. A. Monk seconded the motion, which was carried.
