(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Dec. 15. The December mooting of the Shannon Women’s Institute, held on Wednesday afternoon, took the form of a “gift afternoon” tendered to Miss Picard. Mrs Snelling presided over a large gathering. One new'member was elected and the following committee was elected to control the January meeting, when it is the custom to give the office-bearers and committee a complimentary afternoon: Mesdames McLaggan (convener), A. Thompson, Clarkson, W. Easton, L. Satherley, B. Pope, Harding, C. Johnson and Miss Picard. Members were reminded of the necessity to nominate committee members for. the annual meeting, which takes place in March. Mrs Snelling gave an interesting demonstration of a pretty and simply made electric lampshade, and later presented finished shades to Ivlesdames Radford, Blaikie and Bovis os tokens of appreciation of their assistance at institute meetings. Airs Snelling was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her splendid demonstration. After a dainty afternoon tea, served by Mesdames C. Young, Richardson, Wiggins, Small and Treinewan, members were asked to vote for the bestvase of flowers. Out of a large entry of beautiful blooms of many varieties, Mrs Treinewan secured first place, Mrs Aim second and Mrs C. Johnson third. Mrs Snelling then wished Miss Picard every happiness in her future life and asked her to accept a largo collection of kitchen gifts as a token of the members’ esteem. Miss Picard suitably replied, and much amusement was caused by a competition guessing the contents of the parcels. Mrs Shaw was the winner of a small trophy with 30 out of 44 parcels. At the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening tho council resolved to support a resolution from the Kaiapoi Borough Council that the Minister of Finance be communicated with, requesting that legislation be brought down introducing the compulsory reduction in the rate of bank interest. In connection with tho proposed new legislation contained in tho Municipal Corporations Bill, 1932, regarding the union of boroughs, the Petone Borough Council asked the council to support a petition that certain clauses either be eliminated or a proviso insertod whereby the commission would havo no jurisdiction in a case whore an adverse vote is recorded at a poll. No action was taken by the council. The first companv, Shannon Girl Guides, under Captain E. Quarrie, entertained a large number of girl friends and mothers at a social afternoon on Tuesday. Games, competitions, guide displays and a dainty tea were greatly enjoyed by all, and at tho conclusion of the gathering Guido Ada Gray presentod Miss Quarrie with a handsome crvstal vaso as a token of the love and esteem the girls have for .their popular leader. Miss Quarrie thanked the girls for their kindly action and hoped they would all have many more happy years together. The company has now gone into recess until after tho holidays. . ~ Tho school was successful in winning the Nicol Shield for tho most improved gar-, dens and grounds this year. , Mr H. Woodmase has been compelled to again enter the Palmerston North Hospital for treatment. Mr W. Radford, ]unr. was again operated on in tho Palmerston North Hospital on Wednesday. The bone which was broken in his shoulder some three months ago is still giving trouble.
