CALF CHAMPIONSHIP

BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS. AIANAAVATU-OROUA GROUP AAV ARDS. The final championship judging of the Manawatu-Oroua Group of the Bovs’ and Girls' Calf Club movement took place at the Palmerston North A. and P. Showgrounds yesterday. The judging lasted from 10.30 a.lll. until 1.30 p.m., after which t);e successful competitors received their awards in the Entertainment Hall. A busy day was spent and a conclusion was reached about 3 o’clock after several speeches had been delivered. Reserve champion.—Noeline Ansin’s (Taonui) Joy. Third prize.—Margaret Cheetham’s (Taonui) Nancy A’erv highly commended.—Leon Ansin’s (Taonui) Frisky. Highly commended Marjorie Dear’s (AYaitohi) Trixie. CARE IN REARING. Championship.—Molly Slattery’s (Rongotea) Patsy. Reserve championship.—AA’. Scott’s (Glen Oroua) AA'onder. Third prize.—Betty AVilson’s (Longburn) Madge. A’ery highly commended.- —Leslie Hackett’s (Ashhurst) Kitty. About 30 hook prizes for records, dairy type, condition and care in rearing, presented by the group, were also given to the children. Mr H. J. Fagan (president) wlm occupied the chair, addressed the gathering and stressed the practical side of the calf club movement. The club competitions were lieing held so as to encourage the children to remain rn the land when their secondary education was completed. They would not then compete with city children. Tire speaker had l>een amazed at the progress made and the display had lieen a wonderful one on which all the competitors could be congratulated. He urged the children to carry on in the educational work they were doing, so ns to he among the best farmers in New Zealand. Only tbo.se who were thoroughly efficient would he able to compete in the world’s markets. The speaker welcomed Air Deem, “the father of the calf club movement in New Zealand.” Mr Deem, the director of the fields division of the Department of • 'Agriculture, congratulated those responsible for the excellent work in tlie Alana watu-Oroua group. Tn the calf club movement he had found eagerness on the part of the children and support from the parents and teachers. On behalf of the supervisors, he expressed appreciation of the assistance which had been given. ATr J. AL-Linden. on behalf of the judges, said that the children' had every reason to ho very proud of their achievements. They had shown a wonderful spirit of co-operation, and although all could not win prizes it was not to he thought that the calves were not similar, for there was very little difference between the animals. Tire children owed a debt of gratitude to the Department of Agriculture for stimulating interest in the movement. This was one of the greatest things which could he done for the children

as they grew up, said Mr McLinden. Air Ronald Abraham, on behalf of Messrs Barraud and Abraham, presented the handsome inter-club challenge cup for group competition. Mr Fagan expressed the club’s gratitude to tire firm, which was shown by acclamation. Mr AI. A. Eliott, the president of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association, addressed the gathering and presented the prizes. The district was to he congratulated on having the services of Air Deem, he said. Association recognised the value of tlie movement in making successful potential exhibitors. “As far as our association is concerned, we are right out to assist the movement,” said Mr Eliott, who then presented the awards.
