TERRACE END SCHOOL.

PRESENTATION OF AWARDS. There was a happy function at the Terrace End School, this morning, when a farewell was accorded the sixth standard pupils and the special jn-izes and proficiency and competency certificates were presented. Three members of the School Committee, Messrs W. B. Cameron (chairman), J. Davidson and J. H. Nash, attended the ceremony which was held in the class room at 11 o’clock.

Mr A. W. Thompson, tho headmaster, welcomed the visitors. He expressed pleasure that the year had been a success and especially congratulated the pupils from last' year who had shown sufficient “grit” to persist and ultimately secure their certificates. It was an example for the scholars who had failed this year. Mr Thompson said that the school was sorry to lose the Standard 6 pupils; if they conducted themselves as well after they left, the school would indeed be proud of them. Mr Thompson concluded by wishing the children all success in the future.

Air Cameron congratulated the children on their excellent work. That of the teachers was valued greatly by the parents and they could be congratulated on the success achieved. The foundation had been well-laid in the primary and succeeding classes. Air Cameron mentioned the splendidly equipped school in which the children were taught. Speaking to the pupils who would be entering on their after-school life, Air Cameron urged them to face difficulties with courage and faith, and to make opportunities for service to the city and country. Courage could be taken from tho fact that our difficulties were not God-given, but man-made, and properly trained and equipped youth could correct things. “Do not go out with a dismal outlook, but face the world,” said the speaker, in urging the children to be helpful in their homes. He concluded by telling them to remember the training they had received and to rise again when they had fallen. He expressed to Mr Thompson, Aliss Chapman, Mr Pryor and All* Alorine the thanks of the parents for their valuable work. The children accorded the teachers three rousing cheers on Air Cameron’s call.

Mr Thompson spoke of the excellent staffing of the school. “We are fortunate to have a lady of Miss Chapman’s calibre,” said the headmaster. “In Mr Pryor we have a gentleman who has worked very hard with you and has been most enthusiastic. We are most fortunate in having Mr Morine, for he lias a happy knack of helping children who are finding the work hard.” At the invitation, of their headmaster, the three teachers addressed the children, congratulating them and expressing regret that the time had arrived for “the parting of the ways.” They were all accorded hearty applause. Two book prizes for general knowledge were presented by Mr Nash to Frank Gatley and Audrey McDonald who were congratulated on their success. Miniature cups to the sports champions were presented to Harold Pierard (champion boy) and Pat Simpson (champion girl) by Mr Cameron, who then distributed the proficiency and competency certificates. Mr Davidson addressed the children before the gathering broke up and said that the fine results were a gratification to the committee. He congratulated the staff and the children on the work performed during' the year. The visitors w-ere accorded a vote of appreciation for their presence by three cheers. Prefects certificates were to have been presented, but owing. to these not being available, the recipients w-ill receive them to-morrow as follow: Girls: Vivien Thompson (chief), Ellen Sheppard, Keitha Scales, Mary Hamilton Pearl Goodwin, Naida Maunder, Daphne Barr, Lorna Reid, Esther Smith, Marjorie Beavis. Boys: Wallace Ross (chief), Bryan Waldegrave, Albert Goodwin, Harold Pierard, Jim Elston, D’Arcy Gilchrist, Ewan Davidson, Eric Sew-ard, Russell Carter, Ron Berryman. ' ~ , , Lorna Hutchins, who had attended to the flowers in the headmaster’s office during the year, received a gift from Mr Thompson.
