HOKOWHITU SCHOOL.

DISPLAY OF WORK. Marking practically the termination of the school year, the Hokowhitu School held a very successful sale of work and parents’ da-y yesterday afternoon and evening, when there was a splendid exhibition of the children’s work. Concurrently, a sale of work was held, and the stalls were most liberally patronised, some being cleared in the afternoon. Numbers of competitions w-ere also held, and the whole function was very enjoyable. The stall-holders wore as follow-: Sw-eets-, Mesdaines G. Houston and J. B. Fleck; work stall, Mesdames V. Daniell and H. Spencer; ice creams, Mesdames G. D. Pattle and J. B. Sankey ; cakes, Mesdames R. J. Tate and W. N. Carmichael; fish pond, Mrs E. F. Bee. The whole sale was under the capable supervision of Mrs Carmichael, convener of an energetic ladies’ committee. j _ The magnificent display of children’s

work which extended the full length of tho school corridors was not only a source of justifiable pride to the pupils, but a distinct credit to the very efficient training given them by the headmaster (Mr L. J. Plank) and tho staff. The excellence of tho handwork was

remarkable, revealding a surprising inventive genius and artistic instinct on the part of many of the pupils. Notable among the exhibits were some splendid pen-an-ink drawings by William Parton, who shows exceptional promise in this direction.

Tho Junior Red Cross League of the school had on exhibition a beautifully illustrated book which they had prepared typifying tho life and geographical features of tho Dominion. This is to be forwarded next week to Tarland, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The cookery exhibited by the Standard 6 girls ivas very attractive, and tho rvoodwork by the boys was admirably finished in a workmanlike manner. The primer classes were represented by a creditable display of plasticine modelling and paper work, indicating surprising skill for children of such tender years. The standards exhibited raffia work, toymaking, passe partout work (an attractive section) and amateur toy-making in progressive degrees of ability. Interesting features wore old records which had been heated and moulded into dishes, the papier maclie designs, and particularly the sewing, fancy work and knitting being very commendable. Pastel drawings by tbe different classes indicated that considerable artistic talent was awaiting development in later years.

During the evening the chairman of the School Committee (Air G. D. Pattie) presented to Horace Shailer the Kia Toa Football Club’s trophy, a miniature gold football, for the most improved player in the school Rugby team during tho season. A song was contributed by L. Shailer and recitations by Alary Baker, Betty Harris, Gwen Sankcy, Eugene Alosley and Alec Fleck.

The gathering was very successful financially, the results exceeding ' expectations.
