LOTTERY IN CHRISTCHURCH.
Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 6. Many points concerning a “red jockeys’ card” lottery were revealed before Mr E. Mosley, S.M., this morning. Frederick Ronald Beale, alias “Nippy” Beale, agent and salesman, aged 39, charged with establishing the lottery on October 31, was fined £SO and costs. Hugh O’Connor, a land salesman, aged 37, charged with assisting in the conduct of the lottery, was fined £4O and costs. Both pleaded guilty after evidence had been heard.
The police described how the lottery was conducted. Before each race meeting a list of jockeys likely to be riding was printed, a great deal of it being by guesswork. Each jockey was allotted a number and three numbers were each marked off on every card. ’Tickets were sold and persons holding tickets with the numbers of the jockeys who had the most points' at the meeting were entitled to a prize. It might be that in the present case there was a “take down” as threats were made to the holder of a winning ticket. Counsel for accused denied that the scheme was a “take down.” There was a suggestion, he said, that a ticket had been altered.
