(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Dec. 5. Mrs E. Bierro, of Sydney, who is visiting New Zealand with her husband, is spending a few days in Foxton as the guest of Mr and Mrs F. Woods, of Russell Street. Mr L. King left Foxton yesterday to take up a position in Wellington. The friends of Mr J. Broad, of Frances Street, will regret to learn that he has been compelled to re-enter the Palmerston North Hospital to undergo further treatment.

Saturday's cricket results are:—Druids beat U.M.P.; Firo Brigade beat Oroua Downs B; Y.M.P. drew with Oroua Downs A. FOXTON, Dec. 6. The funeral of the late George Douglas Urwin, who met his death when schooling a horse at Hiwinui on Snuday, took place at Foxton. Deceased was well known locally. He was born in Foxton and received his education at the Foxton State School. Subsequently he was employed in schooling work by Mr E. Bryant, of Foxten, leaving him only a short time ago to enter the employ of Mr Wallace at Hiwinui. . Swarming of bees is a common sight in Foxton at present and beekeepers have been kept busy collecting now swarms. Only ono pupil_ of the Foxton District High School is sitting for tho matriculation examination this year. * A severe westerly galo did considerable damage to gardens and crops in Foxton and district yesterday. Conditions most unpleasant all day. As a result of scarcity of rain pastures are at present very burnt. Since the curtailment of tho FoxtonPalmerston North train service, and consequent redistribution of work amongst the gangers the Foxton-Himatangi section of lino has' been somewhat neglected with the result that the weeds have grown apace on the permanent way. An innovation in coping with them is at present being tried out, a small horse-drawn plough being used to chip tho weeds ofF. Tho monthly meeting of tho School Committee was held last evening and was presided over by Mr J. K. Hornblow (chairman). Correspondence was received from the Wanganui Education Board confirming the appointment of Miss M. Weeks as assistant teacher. Accounts amounting to £42 13s 5d wore passed for payment. It was reported that the total amount paid out by the committee under the No. 5 scheme (recoverable) waj £97 Ss 9d. Tho visitors for tho month (Messrs McKenzie and Meyer) reported that the grounds were in good order. The headmaster (Mr F. A. Mason) reported that during the past month the annual examinations had boon conducted. _ Tho inspectors visited tho school during the month when everything was found satisfactory. The attendances showed a slight decrease for tho month. Thirteen pupils of the secondary department sat for the intermediate examination for senior free places. Four senior pupils qualified for higher, leaving certificates; threo aro candidates for teachers training college entrance and ono is sitting for University examination. Tho headmaster's report was adopted and tho committee expressed its appreciation of tho inspectors’ report and desired that its commendation bo conveyed to tho staff. The headmaster paid a tribute to his staff and expressed his satisfaction at the very encouraging report. Messrs Reid and Mudford were appointed visitors for tho next period.
