PERSONAL.
The death has occurred in England of Captain William Reid, who was a passenger on the Elingamite when it was wrecked at Three Kings in November, 1902. He assisted the master, Captain Attwood, in getting the ship’s company clear.
With the intention of spending some time in New Zealand studying some of the native bird life, Mr S. Porter, an English naturalist, arrived at Wellington by the Ruahine from London on Saturday. Mr Porter said on his arrival that he hoped to visit Kapiti and Little Barrier Islands, and also had visions of visiting the Antipodes and Macquarrie Islands.
Disappointed at being prevented by a crash in Japan from completing his projected flight around the globe, but nevertheless highly confident that it would not be long before he is doing something interesting in the aviation world, Mr F. O. Chichester, the Wellington airman, returned from England by the Ruahine oil Saturday. Mr Chichester made a sensational departure from Auckland last year, flying across the Tasman via Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands, and after reaching Australia ' flew as far as J apan in an attempt to reach England by way of Alaska, Northern Canada and Greenland. He crashed ratherbadly in Japan, and since the accident has been lecuperating in Devon, England.
