MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

VARIETY OF CASES. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the sitting of the Magistrate s Court to-day. John Robert Watson, aged 19, was charged with the theft at 1 almerston North on September 11 of an overcoat valued at £3, the property of James Frederick Wade. He. was further charged with, on October 6, receiving a bicvele valued at £6, well knowing it to havo been dishonestly obtained. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges and elected to be dealt with sumniai-ily.—Senior-Detective Qmrke stated that accused took the overcoat from the Oroua Hall and gave it to a friend. Apart from the other offence of receiving, nothing else was known against him, and he was now in employment. The Magistrate commented that accused was fairly young, and said he would give him a chance. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon fit any time within 12 months. An order was made for the return of the property to the owners. Alan Brown was charged with negligently driving a motor-car at the intersection of College and Marne Streets on November 29, and with failure to possess a driver’s license. Defendant pleaded guilty to both charges.—Senior-Sergeant liiteliouse said defendant was a stranger to the city and took Ada Street to be a continuation of Marne Street. He encountered two lady cyclists and struck one, Miss Carlisle, who was rather badly hurt. Mr Tremaine, who appeared .for defendant, stated these circumstances were correct, and added that the corner was deceptive, having been the scene of numerous accidents.—The Magistrate imposed a penalty of £2, with 3s costs, on the first charge, and of £l, with 3s costs, on the second.

Richard Clifton Grover was charged that, when driving a motor van at the intersection of College and Ada Streets on November 17, he failed to turn the corner as near to the left as practicable. A further charge of failure to possess a driver’s license was. preferred.—“ This was really a case of speed,” commented Mr Whitehouse. “Defendant was going too fast and could not avoid a car driven by Miss Macdonald, a collision occurring, but his van had the worst of it. ’—A penalty of £2, with 16s costs, was imposed on defendant in respect of the first charge, and of £l, with 10s costs, on the second. Miss Alexis May Macdonald was charged with failure to possess a driver’s license. —Mr Cooper, who appeared for defendant, stated that she had formerly Held. a license, but did not own a car until she purchased one the day before the collision. It was the first time she had taken the vehicle out.—The Magistrate, in view of the circumstances, made the fine 10s, with 10s costs. For riding cycles at night without lights, Patrick Kelilier and John May were each fined 10s, costs amounting to 10s and 12s respectively. Owen Terry, of Linton, was charged with failing to give way to traffic approaching from the right when approaching the intersection of Fitzherbert West Road and Mr Keillor’s private road on October 31. A fine of £l, with 12s costs, was inflicted. Joseph Trembath (of Levin), who did not appear, was fined lCs with 12s costs, for driving a motor vehicle without holding the required license. Two charges of allowing a child to be absent from the Oroua Downs School without exemption were preferred against Samuel Hotereni Hemara. Mr J. W. Rutherford appeared for the Wanganui Education Board. Penalties of 10s, with 10s costs, in each case, were imposed upon defendant. Roselea May Greer (Mr Rolling) took proceedings against Sydney Raymond Greer (-Mr' Cooper) for guardianship and maintenance orders. These were granted, maintenance being fixed at £1 a. week for herself audios week for the child.
