CROSSING TRAGEDY
FOUR PERSONS KILLED
ENGINE AND LORRY COLLIDE.
ACCIDENT IN NEW SOUTH WALES

Four persons were killed and two others were injured seriously to-day in one of the worst level crossing accidents in the history of the State. A locomotive drawing a van collided with a milk lorry at Culwalla, near Bowral, on a southern branch line. Six persons who were aboard the lorry, and wero being driven to Bowral for shopping, were hurled in all directions. Those killed are: Harry Mackie, aged 60; Harry Wilson. 70; Elva Mortimer, 17; Gladys Tolhurst, 15. All are residents of Burrawang. The injured are: Walter Hollins, 29, unmarried, and Joyce Gilbert, who suffered a fracture of the skull and serious internal injuries. Mr Hollins, who was the driver of the lorry, had his collarbone broken. He stated that he did not see the locomotive, his vision being obscured. The train crew were so overcome by the disaster that they were unable to take the locomotive away, and a new crew had to be obtained.
