MAYOR'S CHRISTMAS APPEAL.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —For some years past it has been the practice of the Mayor at this season of the year to make an appeal for funds wherewith to make Christmas a little more cheerful than it otherwise would be for many of our less fortunate citizens. Owing to the many calls that have been made during the past year on a generous public I am 'somewhat diffident about appealing this year. In doing so, however, I would point out that there are many old residents who by reason of their age are now unable to work. Some are in receipt of the old age pension, which by the way has been reduced during the past year; there are also many not even in receipt of this small allowance. A great many in the past have been able to supplement their pension, or where not en-, titled to a pension, to live by an occasional few days’ work weekly, but owing to the prevailing economic conditions this has been denied them during the past year. I therefore appeal to our ever considerate citizens to help mo make Christmas of 1932 a little more cheerful for these people, many of whom have borne the heat and burden of the day.— Yours faithfully, A. E. MANSFORD, Mayor.
